Description

Results

Project SAYS-AMV reveals a diverse and unequal Valencian metropolis, marked by urban dispersion and dependency on private transport.

Using SIG analysis and population surveys, the areas with best public transport and service accessibility were identified against others with greater shortcomings and social vulnerability. These data showcase a correlation between urban shape, emission and territory equity, highlighting the need of coordinated policies on mobility and order. The combination of results provide empirical base to promote a metropolitan mode that is more sustainable, compact and fair.

Statistic and cartographic information gathering about soil uses, etc. to create a SIG of the Valencian Metropolitan Area (AMV).

The data comes from different sources, like cartographical and statistic, orsing, preparing and correcting information for it to be added to our SIG. The definition of the area of study was carried out from the file listado_municipios_amv.xls, containing the municipalities that form the AMV according to the studies on daily mobility and territory cohesion (Salom, et al., 2007, 2010). The only modification was the removal of countryside zones corresponding to the Loriguilla and Domeño municipalities, which do not belong to the metropolitan area (due to its boundaries). Once the boundaries are stablished, a layer for the cut of the original TeleAtlas layers is created. This cutting is a pplied to a layer containing all the information of routes corresponding to the TeleAtlas zone including the Valencian Community. That is how the definitive cut, Vias_CV.shp, is obtained.Information from Cartociudad is incorporated, correcting some mistakes of inframunicipality detail level. The data regarding the electoral register was downloaded form the INE website in order to obtain two population data files: a) population classified by age groups (5 years) and gender, and b) population classified by nationality and gender. Thanks to the TeleAtlas information, we work on the correction and qualification of streets and routes in order to incorporate the public transport equipment; to that end, it is vital to connect the streets network to subway and tram stations. Given the few stops, this operation has been carried out manually as well as the generation of topology and creation of the route system.

This task was particularly arduous and took more time than the team anticipated, adapting to the TransCad requirement, the programme later used to calculate accessibilities. We have also estimated speed and travel time of the networks (in different manners: by foot, care and public transport) to the same end, and using official data (essentialy the València City Hall and the public transport companies) and field work.

The equipments which accessibility is being considerated of are: hospitals, health centres, speciality centres, consults, public schools, highschools, private education centres (grouped by level), vocational training centres (separated between public and private), conservatories, adult education centres, and basic social services. This information is incorporated and worked on with ArcView.

Gatheting document and bibliographic information.

We have carried out a thorough revision of the most recent bibliography on the matter, which has been provided to the team to deepen the knowledge of the punctual aspects of each one's specialty. With the national and international bibliographic analysis, we have a report that points out the necessity of a new way to explain urban processes. Traditional concepts no longer respond well to reality, since they combine, creating more complex processes that lead to the immediate territory consequences of enhancing centrality and developing new or traditional centres in the influence area that also enhance its own hinterland. The urban growth model becomes complex and particularly dynamic. Social sustainability and governability of the territory should adapt to its complexity to become more efficient and better respond the new problems and realities it poses. Our project follows and incorporates theoretical and methodological lines that are being developed on an international level and aims to contribute to scientific advancements.

Survery design about social services and territory

We designed the most ambitious field work survey, with a pilot survey. It was carried out throughout different phases and all team members intervened. It is divided in main sections following the line of work of the project: social-economical aspects, people attention services, mobility, governance, and environment. It has a total of 44 questions, aside from the characterisation questions. The pretest was run in València, with the participants selected by groups depending on district, age and gender. The pretest was run with 200 participants that improved the original survey-

The AMV population survey, its treatment and result elaboration have concluded. Wealso add the interviews with qualified informants on different study areas.

The combination of public social, economical and equipment information has been incorporated, when possible, to the territory bases available for the project, allowing the qualification of space and the run of geostatistic analyses with different complexity levels, fulfilling the project goals. For most of the available information regarding inhabitants, we have worked on a intramunicipality level: Census Section and neighbourhood.
