A glance at the current panorama: persistence, ruptures, threats and strengths. Central themes

The chosen title, “A glance at the current panorama: persistence, ruptures, threats and strengths”, gives an idea of what this gathering intends to accomplish. Born with a desire for continuity, it intends to be a forum that periodically brings together researchers, performers, cultural agents, associations and people interested in traditional music, ritual and popular dances and festive drama.

We hope this first edition is just the beginning of a series of gatherings that will open a dialogue about shared experiences and diverse studies. We aim to create a space for reflection, discussion and analysis that will allow the participants to gain first-hand knowledge of the current panorama of Valencian intangible heritage through the cultural expressions of dance, music and drama.

The central themes of this 1st Symposium are:

  • The genres of traditional Valencian music: definition and characteristics; history and archives; different forms of expressions; musical spaces; impact and roots in our society.
  • Traditional Valencian dance: types of ritual dances, uses and significance; strong foothold of popular or social dances, stage dances, square and street dances; survival and changes in repertoires; masters and schools; archives, compilation and reproduction; transversality between Valencian dance and other disciplines of the performing arts.
