The workshops of the Chair for Traditional Music and Dance of the Universitat de València aim to merge academic work with the dissemination of traditional and popular knowledge in relation to dance, music, theatricality and their contexts.

The first of the three workshops, to be held in Banyeres de Mariola on Saturday 28 September 2024, will focus on the practice of the jota, one of the most widespread choreomusical types in the Valencian geography. A genre that has an open code through which it is possible to sing, dance and play freely. A genre in which the substratum and improvisation have traditionally gone hand in hand, far from the more recent folkloric fixation and singularisation.

The panel discussion will introduce the audience to the understanding of this code. The three simultaneous workshops will allow everyone to put into practice what they are most interested in working on: lyrics, choreography or the harmonic structure and melodies.

The sarao will close the day and will serve to apply what has been learnt in a relaxed atmosphere and to sing, play and dance collectively.
