  1. Install and Open OBS Studio

    • Download and install OBS Studio from the official website.
    • Open the program. OBS may ask you to run an automatic configuration; if so, select the option to Record rather than live stream.
  2. Create a New Scene for the Class

    • OBS organizes content into Scenes. To create a class, start by adding a new scene.
    • In the Scenes section at the bottom left, click the + button to create a new scene and name it something like "Virtual Class."
  3. Add the Webcam Source

    • Select the "Virtual Class" scene, and in the Sources box next to it, click the + button.
    • Select Video Capture Device and give it a name, like "Webcam."
    • In the pop-up window, select your camera in the Device dropdown menu and adjust the resolution according to your needs.
    • Adjust the webcam’s size and position on the OBS canvas by dragging and resizing it to your preferred layout.
  4. Add Shared Resources (such as Screen, PDF, or PowerPoint)

    • To share an application or window, click + in the Sources box and select Window Capture.
    • Choose the application window you want to share, such as a PDF, PowerPoint, or document.
    • If you prefer to capture the entire screen, select Display Capture and choose the monitor you wish to record.
    • Adjust the position and size of the resource on the canvas so it does not interfere with the camera view.
  5. Add a Virtual Whiteboard

    • You can use virtual whiteboard applications like Microsoft Whiteboard, Zoom Whiteboard, or websites like Whiteboard Fox.
    • Open the whiteboard in a separate window.
    • In OBS, add this whiteboard as either Window Capture or Display Capture, just like in the previous step.
    • Adjust its size to occupy the area you prefer on the OBS screen.
  6. Organize the Canvas

    • You can adjust the layout of the camera, shared resource, and whiteboard on the OBS canvas. Drag and resize each element to match your desired layout.
    • Make sure each resource is visible and easy for students to see.
  7. Configure the Audio

    • OBS usually detects the computer’s microphone automatically, but you can adjust the volume in Audio Mixer.
    • Click the gear icon in Mic/Aux to adjust the microphone properties.
    • If you want to add music or effects, click + in Sources and select Audio Input Capture to add audio files or additional devices.
  8. Start Recording

    • Once everything is set up, click Start Recording in the bottom right corner.
    • OBS will record all elements in the canvas of your "Virtual Class" scene.
    • To stop recording, click Stop Recording.
  9. Save and Share the Video

    • The recorded file will be saved automatically on your computer, in the folder you selected in the OBS settings (by default, it’s in Videos).
    • You can share this file with students through a learning platform or upload it to cloud storage services.

Additional Tips

  • Keyboard Shortcuts: OBS allows you to set up shortcuts to start/stop recording and switch between scenes.
  • Add Text: You can add text (e.g., the class title or your name) by selecting + in Sources and choosing Text.
