Kdenlive is an open-source, non-linear video editing program, ideal for users who need to edit videos professionally without licensing costs. It is especially useful in educational settings for creating and editing educational videos with advanced and accessible editing tools.
1. Create a New Project and Set Up the Timeline
- Open Kdenlive and select New Project.
- Choose the resolution and frame rate for your video (for example, 1080p at 30 fps).
- Save the project with a suitable name for easier future edits.
2. Import the Video
- Click on Add Clip or Folder in the Project section (located in the upper left).
- Select the video file you want to edit. It can be a WEBM file or another format; Kdenlive supports a wide variety.
- Drag the clip to the Timeline to start working on it.
3. Trim the Video
- To trim specific parts, select the Scissors tool (or press
X
) in the toolbar above the timeline. - Click at the start and end points of the part you want to cut.
- Select the unwanted section and press Delete on your keyboard to remove it.
- You can move the resulting clips to adjust the flow of the timeline.
4. Add Text to the Video
- In the Project section, click on Add Title.
- The Title Editor will open. Type in the text you want to display, such as the lesson name or teacher’s name.
- Customize the text by adjusting the font, size, color, and position.
- Click OK when you're done. The title will appear as a clip in the Project section.
- Drag the title clip to the timeline and place it on the upper track to overlay it on the video.
5. Add Images or Solid Colors
- To add an image (for example, a logo), click on Add Clip or Folder and select the image you want to insert.
- Drag the image to the Timeline and adjust its duration and position.
- To add a solid color (such as a background for text), go to Project > Add Color Clip and choose the desired color.
- Adjust the color clip in the timeline. You can place it behind the text for added visibility or use it as a temporary background.
6. Export the Video in MP4
- When you’re done editing, click Render (button located in the upper right).
- In the render window, select MP4 as the export format.
- Adjust the quality and resolution options as needed.
- Click Start Render to begin exporting the video.
- The MP4 file will be saved in the specified location, ready to share with students.
