Scientific survival in an era of CV and citation manipulation

alt=

THIS COURSE WILL BE THOUGHT IN ENGLISH

Throughout the last couple decades, the conscience of the “good scientific practices” has grown at the universities and research institutions with the increase in the cases of falsification, fabrication and plagiarism (FFP), as well as the conflict of interests and authorship.

Even though the rules to safeguard science are widely available to the public, the rising and systematic appearance of FFP problems is proof enough of a much more profound and inherent crisis in the scientific research and publication, running deep under the surface.

Particularly, the “curriculum polishing” via the “citations game” through excessive “invited” authorships and “hyper” and “citation posters”, “paper factories”, predatory journals and conferences, etc. are generating profound worries in the scientific community and threaten to destroy public trust in science and research.

Goals

The goal of the course if to raise awareness and provide guidelines to the young academics about how to detect and avoid bac practices. The course will first provide a fundamental understanding of the “erosion of scientific integrity”, providing definitions, debating its origins, dimensions and elements. Then we’ll talk about the “Faces of the Dissemination Crisis”, how to detect and challenge them.

This is considered essential to educate the next generation of young academics in the principles of modesty, integrity and autonomy, becoming an antidote against the rising disdain for science as opinion among others. This rational narrative seems essential in a society of rapid changes with great challenges lying ahead.
