SEMINAR(i): Pacific biodiversity and the price of green energy: what we should know about

WHO?: Magdalena Błażewicz (University of Łódź)

LANGUAGE?: English.

WHEN?: Thursday 16/12/2021 - 12:00 am.

WHERE?: Seminar Room - SS6 (Institutes building floor -1) & Live streaming.

ABSTRACT:

The deep-sea fauna on the Pacific floor is unique and mostly unknow to science. It is characterized by high endemism, high biodiversity, and extremely low population density. Recent studies have shown a lack of genetic connectivity between the areas designated for mining operations and areas pointed as biodiversity reservoirs (APEI: Area of Particular Environmental Interests). Activities associated with mining from the ocean floor, already tested and planned to start in the near future, will lead to disruption of these fragile ecosystems and cause unpredictable changes in the biological diversity of the ocean floor and the water column.
