Departments

The Department of Classical Philology at the University of Valencia was created in 1986 after the merging of the former workshops in Latin and Greek, which for a long time were responsible for organising the teaching of their respective subjects in the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts and later in the faculties arising from their split: Language Studies, Geography and History, Philosophy and Education Sciences.

In our university, Classical Philology was introduced as a specialty of the Llicenciatura in Classical Philology in the curriculum of 1979. In 1993 -year of the implementation of the new curricula which, with the modifications of the reform in 2000, are still in effect- the old Llicenciatura in Philology disappeared and split into various degrees. Since then, Classical Philology is not a specialty, but a degree, whose specialty is studied from the first year of the degree.

The Department of Classical Philology at the University of Valencia aims not only to train future Latin and Hellenist scholars, but also to contribute, by offering optional and free-elective subjects, to the training of future graduates in other areas of humanistic knowledge: in the various branches of Philology, History, Philosophy, and even in Law.
