On Tuesday, March 7, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) presented the Interdisciplinary Thematic Platform (PTI) Climate and Climate Services:

This is a new instrument of the organization that brings together scientific teams specialized in atmosphere and climate and aims to address in a coordinated manner one of the major global challenges set by the United Nations: the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 13, focused on climate action.

This platform aims to be a backbone for the development of thematic and sectoral climate services, collaborating with AEMET and initially encompassing CSIC groups working in different areas of climate and with experience in basic research and development of climate products and services. In this way, the Platform aims to constitute a dynamic core of both activities (research and development), with a continuous and interactive evolution between the provision of services and climate research.

In terms of research, the priority objective is to advance in the knowledge of the physical bases of climate variability and change through the development of analysis methods and the development and use of climate models, as well as in the quantification of its multidisciplinary impacts.

The CIDE research team belonging to the Climate, Atmosphere and Ocean Laboratory (Climatoc-Lab; https://climatoclab.csic.es; consolidated group -AICO- of the Generalitat Valenciana), participates in this ITP leading one of the climate services for which a wind atlas/viewer will be developed based on interpolated historical grid observations (0.1°, 9-km), through the application of ML-AI techniques; and its learning from simulated products. This viewer will include climatologies and wind indices (average speeds, calm days, trends, return periods of maximum gusts, etc.).
