The Department of Ecology and Global Change is a department with a broad vision that studies the functioning of ecological and agricultural systems and their relationship to global change. One area of the department focuses especially on natural systems, and focuses on the mechanisms that maintain biodiversity, as well as the dynamics of ecosystems as a function of changes in climate, land use, and fire regime. All of this is studied from both an ecological and evolutionary perspective, including an applied aspect (e.g., in ecological restoration). Another area of the department focuses on agricultural systems, and is mainly centered on the efficient use of natural resources, mainly water. The objective of this area is to provide a scientific basis for ensuring the sustainability of agricultural activity in the context of climate change. The Department works at different scales and levels of organization, and uses a wide variety of techniques to answer the questions posed, from detailed analyses with genomic data to studies with remote sensing techniques at planetary scale.
