Description

The Doctoral Programme in History of Art of the Universitat Jaume I of Castellón and the University of Valencia, which organizes it, has been awarded the Excellence Award for the academic years 2011-2012, 2012-2013-2013-2014 (Resolution from the Ministry of Education). The Department of Art History of the University of Valencia has a recognised teaching experience in the field of knowledge, and offers an own doctoral studies programme since 1986. Meanwhile, the Universitat Jaume I has an area of History of Art since 1991, it is currently registered in the Department of History, Geography and Art. This experience in postgraduate studies and joint UV-UJI has been positively evaluated several times by the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation of Spain (ANECA), which once distinguished the doctoral programme "Art, landscape and visual culture" with a Quality Award (Resolution by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, 2008). Afterwards, these Doctoral Studies became into the interuniversity Master’s Degree in “History of Art and Visual Culture” (collaborating UV – UJI), currently in force, with the Quality Award and a qualification of Excellent by the Evaluation and Foresight Valencian Agency (AVAP). The Doctoral Programme in History of Art of the Universitat Jaume I of Castellón and the University of Valencia, which organizes it, has been awarded the Excellence Award for the academic years 2011-2012, 2012-2013-2013-2014 (Resolution from the Ministry of Education). To make possible the formation, a remarkable flexibility in choosing proposals to complete the 150 hours of training activities is advocated: 60 cross-disciplinary (managed by the Doctoral School) and 90 specific (managed by the own Doctoral Programme).

Goals

The Doctoral Programme in History of Art of the University of Valencia and the Universitat Jaume I provides and advanced training in the field of visual arts, through the academic specialisation in the analysis of art production and its processes of creation and reception over time and between different cultures. It aims at preparing professionals with a deep understanding of the artistic heritage, being able to participate in its preservation, dissemination and social enjoyment, and to promote critical knowledge of the different contemporary art forms related to the image world. Together with this double academic and professional preparation, this programme provides the skills to tackle research tasks in all artistic creation fields, which enables to undertake and develop and original research, focused on the preparation and defence of a doctoral thesis.

Basic competences:

  1. Systematic understanding of a field of study and mastery of the skills and methods of research associated with that field.
  2. Ability to conceive, design or create, implement and adapt a substantial process of research and creation.
  3. Ability to contribute to the expansion of the frontiers of knowledge through original research.
  4. Ability to carry out a critical analysis, assessment and synthesis of new and complex ideas.
  5. Ability to communicate with the academic and scientific community and society in general about their areas of knowledge in the ways and languages ​​commonly used in the international scientific community.
  6. Ability to promote, within academic and professional contexts, scientific, technological, social, artistic or cultural advancement in a knowledge-based society.

Personal abilities and skills

  1. Knowing how to handle certain tasks in contexts where there is little specific information.
  2. Finding the key questions that must be answered to solve a complex problem.
  3. Designing, creating, developing and launching new and innovative projects in their field of knowledge.
  4. Working both in team and independently in an international or multidisciplinary context
  5. Integrating knowledge, handling complexity, and making judgments with limited information.
  6. The criticism and intellectual defence of solutions.

Offered places for new students: 17 places.
