Daniel Morant Garrigues is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Plant Biology at the University of Valencia, within the area of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry. He holds a PhD in Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Valencia and is a member of the Limnology Research Group at the Cavanilles Institute of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology, and has occupied a postdoctoral position funded through the Atracció de Talent programme, with a research stay at the University of Oxford. His academic and research career has been developed within the field of environmental sciences, with a particular focus on freshwater ecosystem ecology, carbon biogeochemistry, climate change, and the conservation of Mediterranean wetlands.

Throughout his career, he has built a multidisciplinary profile integrating field ecology, environmental monitoring, experimental research, spatial analysis, and environmental data science. His research has focused on understanding how global-change divers affect the functioning of aquatic ecosystems and Mediterranean wetlands. In recent years, this research has expanded towards the study of wetland soils and sediments, with special emphasis on their role in carbon storage, greenhouse-gas emissions, and other biogeochemical processes relevant to climate-change mitigation and adaptation.

His expertise includes the design and implementation of field surveys, the assessment of carbon stocks and greenhouse-gas fluxes, and the management of large environmental databases. He has also worked extensively with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing techniques for wetland mapping, monitoring, and ecological assessment.

He has participated in twelve competitive research projects and twelve research contracts involving public administrations and private organisations. He has authored eighteen papers in peer-reviewed international journals, mainly in the fields of limnology, carbon biogeochemistry, and wetland remote sensing. He has also contributed to the ecological assessment and monitoring of lakes and wetlands under the framework of the European Water Framework Directive and Habitats Directive, promoting the transfer of scientific knowledge to ecosystem management and conservation.
