Emergency Drill in the Faculty of Biological Sciences of the Burjassot-Paterna Campus.

  • April 12th, 2017

On Tuesday, 11 March 2017, the Health and Safety and the Environment Service of the Universitat de València carried out the first emergency drill in the Faculty of Biological Sciences of the Burjassot Campus.

It counted with the collaboration of the Security and Environment of the Universitat de València and technicians of the maintenance company of the Burjassot Campus, Vareser 96 S.L. and the company that manages the maintenance of this campus called Valnu.

On this occasion, they decided to simulate a fire in one of the research laboratories located on the fifth floor of the Block B of the Faculty. Due to the large amount of smoke and the way the fire evolved, the Emergency Chief of the Faculty decided to evacuate both buildings of the Faculty ─ Block A and Block B.

Two people pretended to be injured, too. One of them was in the third floor of Block A and the emergency team of that block attended and evacuated them. The other injured person was attended in the first instance by the emergency team of Block B but, due to the gravity of the injuries, they could not carry out the evacuation. It was the firefighters of the Burjassot Park who rescued them. Lately, this person was attended by the health staff of the Health Emergency Service of the Valencian Government (SAMU).

It also counted with the collaboration of the Provincial Fire Consortium of Valencia, the Local Police of the Burjassot City Hall and the 112 Service of the Valencian Community.

Fire drills allow the evaluation of emergency plans specifically elaborated for each centre or building and checking if its own devices, human and technical, as well as its organization are adequate to face real emergency situations. Furthermore, fire drills are a great opportunity to practice and disseminate the prevention culture among the university community, as written in the Prevention Plan of the Universitat de València.
