How to connect with linux with VPN

In this text, it is explained how to connect to the VPN of the UV if you use Ubuntu Linux. Specifically, it has been tested with Hardy (8.04) and Gutsy (7.10).

Install the appropriate software

Before start the configuration, you have to install the vpnc programme. You can do it from the [Applications -> Add/Delete] menu.

Note: If you want to do it from the command line, you must install the network-manager-vpnc and vpnc packages: aptitude install network-manager-vpnc vpnc

Once installed, proceed to set up the connection through the network manager, clicking the network manager icon on the menu bar.

VPN Configuration

Select the “VPN Configuration” menu, just like the previous image shows.
The icon may shift to red o red 2 depending on if you use a wired or wireless connection.

A new window should appear, where you can add and edit VPN connections, you simply click + Add . A wizard should appear in a new window.

Indicate that you are connecting with a compatible Cisco client, as shown in the following image, and click Forward.

Setup the connection parameters in the window that appears:
Connection Name: In this field, enter the name you want to give the connection, which will be shown later when you connect, i.e: Universitat de València

In the tab Required, enter this fields:
Gateway:vpn.uv.es
Group Name:uvalencia

And in the tab Optional:
You just choose Override user name, and enter your UV user name, the same as your email, omitting @uv.se.

The password will be required after establishing the connection.

Now, just like you did it before, click the Network icon in the notification field and select VPN Connections -> Universitat de València (if you named it as Universitat de València)

You should be asked for 2 passwords, the first one corresponding to the UV user, and being the same as the UV.
The latter, just like it is shown, is universidad and you can use the same.
You can opt for the password manager to save the password, so it not will be requested in further connections.

 

Authenticate VPN

 

So, the connection has been created, the icon has been changed, and a padlock is displayed at the top of the icon.
Note: Take into account that if the firewall is on, it may doesn’t work at 100% of the connection.
