SEMINAR(i): The evolution of ultraviolet signals in lizards
WHO?: Dr. Arnaud Badiane (iEES Paris - Sorbonne Université)
WHAT?: The evolution of ultraviolet signals in lizards
WHEN?: Thursday 10/01/2019 – 12:00 am
WHERE?: Seminar room - IFIC (Institutes building floor 1)
ABSTRACT:
Animal signals respond to selection on their information content (strategic design) and their efficacy according to habitat conditions (tactical design), but how these two forces interact to generate intra-specific variation remains poorly understood. Here, after resolving a methodological issue about the objective measurement of colours, I examine the relative roles of strategic and tactical selection on the design of ultraviolet patches of male common wall lizards Podarcis muralis across a broad bioclimatic range. I also explore ultraviolet colours in a different functional context using the Australian bluetongue skinks Tiliqua scincoides and their spectacular tongue display.
