Cinema, Imaginary and Tourism
CITur is an international R&D research group linked to the Department of Language Theory and Communication Sciences at the University of Valencia. It was founded by Dr. Antonia del Rey Reguillo and is currently coordinated by Dr. Rosanna Mestre Pérez. The group’s research focuses on the study of the relationships between cinema, social imaginaries and tourism, with particular attention to the Spanish case.
The group includes researchers from various fields of knowledge and from both national and international universities, such as Marquette University (USA), Dartmouth College (USA), Université Gustave-Eiffel (France), University of Delhi (India), as well as the University of Seville and the International University of Valencia, among others.
CITur began its activity in 2005 with the project The image of Spain as a tourist destination built through cinema (Ref. GV114/05). This was followed by The interaction between Spanish cinema and tourism: historical-thematic development; cultural, political and economic keys (Ref. HAR2011-27750). The third project was The spaces of Spanish cinema as a factor in promoting the geographical and cultural heritage of Spain (Ref. HAR2016-77734-P), and the fourth Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the elements of audiovisual fiction that influence tourism and their effects on audiences and potential tourists (Ref. PID2020-112668GB-I00).
CITur's research is developed through interdisciplinary approaches that combine film and audiovisual studies with human geography, tourism marketing and cultural studies, using mixed research methodologies, both qualitative and quantitative.
