What is an actuary?

In spite of the increasing demand of professionals specialised in Actuarial and Financial Sciences, society does not usually know the responsibilities and job opportunities of actuaries

8 june 2017

Where there are risks, there is a job opportunity for an actuary. With the right analytical tools, an actuary helps companies, institutions and agencies, both public and private, to plan their future and protect against expected and unexpected losses.
A correct understanding of nature and the extent of the risks inherent to economic and social development contributes to the sustainable profitability of business activities, to the adequate investment of savings for retirement, to the design and offering of coverage at a fair price and, in general, to a financial stability of individuals and society in general.

An actuary contributes to the financial stability of individuals and society in general

Insurance companies, financial institutions, investment fund managers, pension funds and more and more companies and corporations with a modern and global view of risk management make their decisions after consulting with actuaries, because their vision of problems provides a real safeguard against unwanted and even catastrophic events.

In addition, a large part of these responsibilities are regulated by European and national insurance and pension legislation, expressly recognising the ability of actuaries to perform their role as a key component of the corporate governance system.

On the other hand, many employability reports, both national and international, place the actuarial profession as one of the best positioned in terms of payment, growth potential and quality of work environment.
