RTVE will incorporate 3D graphics in real time to its television programmes with information collected from social networks thanks to the signing of the Visualmedia project, a European programme within the H2020 (Horizon 2020).

The objective of the project Immersive and Interactive Real Time 3D Social Media Graphics Environments for the Broadcast Industry, commonly known as Visualmedia, is to introduce technological innovations through advanced interaction and visualization techniques aiming at creating added value to the audience and the industry.

“For us, this is the first European project and it opnes up an important pathway as audiovisual communication goes through companies, universities and partners all around Europe”, appointed RTVE’s Corporate CEO, Enrique Alejo, during the signature of the agreement last 14 January.

For its part, Francisco Ibáñez, RTVE’s R&D project manager stated that this project will allow an improvement of the audience’s participation in television programmes. To integrate 3D graphics in real time, two modules are necessary: a social media one able to collect and structure information proceeding from social networks and a second one which presents such information as real-time 3D graphics. Tracking systems in cameras will allow hosts to rotate such graphics during the programme’s broadcast.  Likewise, all this information will be diverted to a second screen in a tablet or in a mobile phone.Image source: panoramaaudiovisual.com

The agreement has also been subscribed by 12 European entities, among which we can highlight the Institut für Rundfunktechnik, the Bayerischer Rundfunk, the University of Surrey in Great Britain and the Spanish company Brainstorm Multimedia, specialised in giving 3D solutions to the cinema and television field.

Visualmedia is a project within the H2020 (Horizon 2020), the European Union Framework Programme for Research and Innovation for the 2014-2020 period which tackles the main social challenges, promotes industrial leadership in Europe and reinforce the excellence of its scientific basis.  An initiative which counts with a budget of 76,880 millions of Euros.
