MANUEL CASTILLO 2017 AWARD IN THE MODALITY OF UNPUBLISHED RESEARCH

Last Wednesday, 7 February 2018 in the Aula Magna of La Nau Cultural Centre, with the collaboration of the Office of the Vice-Principal for Internationalization and Cooperation and the General Foundation, the Universitat de València held the Manuel Castillo Awards 2017. This event was chaired by the Principal of the Universitat de València, Esteban Morcillo, accompanied by the Vice-Principal Guillermo Palao and the representative of Manuel Castillo Legacy, José María García Álvarez-Coque.
Manuel Castillo Awards are held annually at a state level. The aim of this event is to recognise and disseminate the most interesting results for the Spanish society regarding international cooperation, peace and its contribution to sustainably human development around the world.

Elena Mut, professor of the Universitat de València, rewarded by her work “Activism of political Colombian women refugees”, in the modality of Unpublished Research.
This is an unpublished doctoral dissertation, defended in the framework of the Doctorate in gender, knowledge, subjectivity and culture of the Universitat de València, conducted by Professor Josepa Cucó Giner.

Elena Mut explains in her own unpublished monograph: “social changes promoted by Colombian women refugees living in Spain may seem minority or marginal, but they can constitute interesting signs of the transformations of global society.”
The text comprises the political prominence of women dislocated from Colombia due to the armed conflict which has been harming the country for years. Based on an extended and intense qualitative search, the author shows how Colombian women refugees are able to generate social change, after suffering the roughness of the conflict and inequality. They achieve this aim by building networks and stablishing strategies which contribute to become the bases of a critical citizenship. The search highlights the importance of reorientation of vital itineraries in the construction of a social agency that, because of its international dimension, ended up the transcendent local context and particular conflict towards a global dimension. The award will consist on the publication on the text on Publicaciones of the Universitat de València.
