Next Wednesday, February 26, Dr. Gómez Canseco will give a lecture titled "What a Philologist Is For: Critical Edition and Texts" in classroom 405 of the Faculty of Philology, Translation and Communication at 6:00 PM.
Luis Gómez Canseco is one of the leading experts in Spanish Golden Age literature. A professor at the University of Huelva, he has led various research projects focusing on topics such as epic poetry, Cervantes’ theater, and the figure of the great humanist Arias Montano. Among his numerous publications, he has written many articles in specialized journals and monographs that are essential references on Cervantes, Arias Montano, and Rodrigo Caro. Furthermore, Professor Gómez Canseco is one of the most respected editors of classical texts. Notably, he has authored canonical critical editions of works by authors such as Lope de Vega and Cervantes, as well as essential works of Spanish literature, including Mateo Alemán’s Guzmán de Alfarache, a key work in the picaresque novel tradition alongside Lazarillo (RAE, 2012); the mythical and controversial Quijote of Avellaneda (RAE, 2014); Alonso de Ercilla’s epic poem La Araucana (RAE, 2022); and more recently, Juan de Mena’s monumental Laberinto de Fortuna (Cátedra, 2024). In this lecture, Professor Gómez Canseco will specifically discuss the editing of texts, one of the important pillars of philology.
