Oxidative stress and its applications in Biomedicine

Oxidative stress and its application in Biomedicine is the last compulsory subject of the Master’s Degree in Physiology of the Universitat de València and consists of 8 ECTS credits.

28 january 2016

The subject of oxidative stress and its application in Biomedicine is the last compulsory subject of the Master’s Degree in Physiology and consists of 8 ECTS credits, divided in two subjects of 4 ECTS credits: ‘Physiology and Pathophysiology of the Free Radicals and Antioxidants’ and ‘Pathophysiology of Rare Diseases’. This subject supposes one of the strengths of this master’s degree, since it is based on two state-of-the-art subjects in technology and procedure, as well of being the fields of state-of-the-art study.

  • ‘Physiology and Pathophysiology of the Free Radicals and Antioxidants’ will provide the students complete knowledge on the main free radicals in Biomedicine, the concept of oxidative stress and its biological markers. The main subject of study is the part that the reactive oxygen and nitrogen species play in the free radicals that come from oxygen. The subject will also focus on the involvement of these free radicals in the neurodegenerative diseases, in diabetes, in cancer and in acute and chronic inflammatory processes. The possible use of antioxidants in the treatment and prevention of the diseases is one of the most interesting avenues for research that these studies present. This academic year the subject has fourteen different professors. Consult all the information here

  • ‘Pathophysiology of the Rare Diseases’ is a state-of-the-art subject in the Master’s Degree in Physiology. It is based on the wide knowledge of the rare diseases, their definition and pathology. The role of the free radicals, the oxidative stress and the redox reaction are key in these studies. Furthermore, the subject will taught the DNA repair mechanisms in rare diseases with gene instability and the new treatment options to treat the studied rare diseases. The subject will draw from the premise of how to identify these rare diseases, how to diagnose them, emphasising in the social aspect. Most of the classes will be taught by researchers specialised in the field and researchers from CIBERER (Centre for Biomedical Research in Network of Rare Diseases, from the Carlos III Health Institute) will be also part of the teaching body. The subject has five different professors. For more information on the teaching body go here

These two subjects are important due to they provide state-of-the-art knowledge in the field of physiology and because they are studies constantly advancing and updating. The students that take these subjects will keep up with the latest researches on oxidative stress and their application in Biomedicine, which emphasises the research nature of this Master’s Degree and provide the students a current vision in the researchers on rare diseases and free radicals.
