Why studying a Doctorate in Physiology?

To continue studying a Doctorate and specialising in the scientific research may be a great personal and professional opportunity.

Physiology is a very complex science that requires many years of study: widening this knowledge with a Doctorate is an exceptional way of focusing in the scientific research. The option of choosing a Master’s Degree and later continuing with a Doctorate is one of the possibilities that the curriculum of the Universitat de València offers.

1.    Which are the admission requirements?
The students that want to take part of the Doctoral Student must have a minimum of 60 credits in Official Postgraduate Programmes or have an Official Master’s Degree.

2.    What are the objectives?
The objectives of the Doctorate are focused on the process and the research techniques. At the end of this project it is necessary to carry out a Doctoral Thesis, which is an innovative scientific work: it is necessary to open a new research line and obtaining results that to this day were unknown.

3.    How long are these studies?
The duration of this study programme is not officially established in Europe but it is set up with an average duration of three years with full-time dedication.

4.    What do you get after taking a Doctorate?
When finishing your doctoral studies you can get many advantages: a complete specialisation in the field (the Doctorate supposes the highest graduated studies level that you can get in any academic field), recognition and prestige, professional contacts and a very wide experience.

The doctors must perfectly know the specific field of study (in this case, physiology) and also all the research techniques and methodologies of this field. This field supposes a continuous updating process of knowledge, since all the news related with physiology and the new study and development techniques must be known.

The Doctoral Thesis supposes a turning point: it must lead to a significant contribution in the field of physiology and an innovative research. The critical analysis of the doctors and their ability of explaining, relating, evaluating and synthesise their ideas must be verified.

Nowadays, many researches are focused on the Alzheimer’s pathophysiology, which is being investigated in the whole world since it is a disease of primary importance today. Any study in pathophysiology supposes a great advance in this field of study and is very much welcomed by the scientific community.

Ultimately, the Doctoral Studies are a very complex way that not many students choose since they suppose (at least) three years of research and very specific studies. This is a perfect programme for the students that have a clear vocation and that want to reach the highest level of studies in physiology. It is also a huge challenge for science since each new doctor must carry out a new research.

At the Universitat de València the Master’s Degree in Physiology has a clear scientific vocation, this is why continuing the studies with a Doctorate in this field means reaching the highest level of graduated studies and it is contemplated in the curriculum of the Universitat.
