Which subjects will I take in the first year of the Master’s degree? Part 1

In this post we will briefly explain the subjects of the Master’s degree 'Advanced signal processing for communications', 'Multimedia systems and communications', 'Advanced communication networks and protocols', 'Distributed systems and services', 'Microelectronic design' and 'Advanced instrumentation and measurement systems'.

24 february 2016

The Master’s degree in Telecommunications Engineering of the Universitat de València consists of a year and a half (from September 2015 to December 2016) and has a teaching load of 90 ECTS credits. We briefly detail some of the subjects of the first year of the Master’s degree below.

Advanced signal processing for communications

This subject (5 ETCS) is taught from February 2016 to May 2016. It presents the main statistical signal processing advanced techniques, used to solve certain problems found in the modern communications systems. The contents of the syllabus are:

  • Transmission and reception techniques in Gaussian channels.
  • Detection, bit and symbol error rates;
  • MLSE Estimation;
  • Adaptative equalizer (LMS, RLS).

Multimedia systems and communications

This subject (5 ETCS) is taught from September 2015 to January 2016. In this subject students will study the multimedia codification systems, focusing on the audiovisual codification. The aim is that the students acquires enough knowledge and abilities to works with the current multimedia communications systems, both from the psychophysical point of view and from the basics of the information theory and the related algorithmic. Some contents of the syllabus are:

  • Basic tools (entropy encoding, quantization, prediction and transforms);
  • Review of techniques and standards (DPCM, ADPCM, MPEG Audio MP3 and JPEG2000);
  • Coding with error recovery (error resilience, H26X and MPEG2);
  • Indexing of Multimedia Contents (MPEG7).

Advanced communications networks and protocols.

This subject (5 ETCS) is taught from September 2015 to January 2016. The student shall be able to understand and define new specifications for the data networks which integrate different types of services, also including the multimedia traffic. Some contents of the syllabus are:

  • Internet architecture;
  • Multimedia support;
  • Advanced tunneling concepts;
  • Advanced signalling systems.

Distributed systems and services

This subject (5 ETCS) is taught from September 2015 to January 2016. It offers a comprehensive and globalising vision of everything related to distributed programming and mobile computing. Some contents of the syllabus are:

  • Fundamentals of design of distributed system;
  • Development of distributed apps based in Web Services;
  • Services oriented architecture (SOA)
  • Software Development for ubiquitous computing.

Microelectronic design

This subject (5 ETCS) is taught from September 2015 to January 2016. It will provide the necessary knowledge the students needs to acquire abilities and get familiar with the microelectronic design. Some contents of the syllabus are:

  • Manufacturing processes and technologies;
  • Physics of the MOS device;
  • Differential pair with MOS loads:
  • Gilbert multiplier cell.

Instrumentation systems and advanced measurements

This subject (5 ETCS) is taught from September 2015 to January 2016. It presents the theoretical contests needed to acquire a vision of the concepts of “measuring systems”, “intelligent sensor” and of the technological consequences that they involve from the point of view of the design of measuring or control systems applied to real environments. Some contents of the syllabus are:

  • Linearization systems;
  • Sampleand-Hold circuits;
  • A/D and D/A converters;
  • Mixed processing techniques in intelligent sensors.

The University Master’s Degree in Telecommunications Engineering of the Universitat de València trains its students from a multidisciplinary perspective around three basic pillars: signal, electronics and telematics. It is taught in the School of Engineering (ETSE) and it is the first Professional Master’s Degree in Telecommunications Engineering in València, as it enables its students to works as Telecommunications engineers, substituting thus, the previous engineering degree which lasted 5 years. You can find more information about the curriculum of the Master’s Degree here.
