Conference on the Zika virus: an international emergency

Today, Thursday 18 February, it takes place the Conference on the Zika Virus, organised by the Collaborative Research Network on Tropical Diseases (RICET) and the National Health School, in which experts on the subject will talk, among other things, about the keys to prepare and response in Spain.

The conferences take place at the ‘Pittaluga’ room of the school in Madrid. The entry is free until full capacity. Interested people can register in its web page. A certificate of attendance will be provided.

The programme of the Conference is the following one and renowned health professionals participate:

09:45. Presentation

The person in charge of presenting the Conference is the Director of the National Centre for Tropical Medicine, Agustín Benito Llanes.

10:00 - 10:30. Epidemiology of disease by the Zika virus. 

The expert of the National Epidemiology Centre, Elena Rodríguez Valín, will speak about the epidemiological field.

10:30 - 11:00. Virological characteristics of Zika virus 

The scientist of the Arbovirus and Imported Viral Diseases Laboratory and the Microbiology National Centre, Ana Vázquez, will explain the characteristics of the virus.

11:00 - 11:30. Clinical aspects of the Zika fever: Clinical characteristics, differences respect dengue fever and chikungunya. 

The specialist physician of the La Paz Carlos III Hospital, will undertake this interesting analysis.

11:30 – 12:00 The diagnosis in Spain.       

The head of the Arbovirus and Imported Viral Diseases Laboratory and expert in the Microbiology National Centre, Mª Paz Sánchez-Seco, will talk about the diagnosis and its methods in the country.

12:00 - 12:45. Break  

12:45 – 13:15 Potential vectors of Zika virus in Spain: past, present and future. 

The expert of the Medical Entomology Laboratory within the Microbiology National Centre, Ricardo Molina, will deal with the vector-borne transmission of Zika.

13:15 – 13:45 Keys for the preparation and response in Spain

The specialist of the Centre for Coordination of Alerts and Health Emergencies. MSSSI Carmen Amela Heras, will give the keys on this significant issue.

The Conference on the Zika Virus will end with a discussion with the attendees to debate the topics and to ask the needed questions. This discussion will be carried out from 13:45 to 14:30.
