The 7th International Workshop on Angiostrongylus on September 21st and 22nd

  • May 9th, 2023
Workshop

The workshop will take place on the 21st and 22nd of September, 2023 in the northern part of Tenerife at the School of Pharmacy at the University of La Laguna, Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain).

Angiostrongylus cantonensis, also known as rat lungworm, is a parasitic nematode or roundworm that is spread by rats and snails during their natural life cycle.

Angiostrongylus cantonesis causes eosinophilic meningitis and is most commonly found in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. With respect to Spain, Angiostrongylus cantonensis has been detected in Tenerife, Canary Islands (Foronda et al., 2010).

It seems that heightened daily maritime transit arriving to Spanish ports could be the main entry point for A. cantonensis or its intermediary hosts considering that there is frequent and direct transit between these ports and the regions where this pathogen is endemic.

The illness caused by A. cantonensis generally lasts between 2 to 8 weeks, but it can last longer. Those affected present symptoms of bacterial meningitis such as nausea, vomiting, stiffness in the neck, headaches, and general severe body pains. Some may also experience abnormal sensations in their arms and legs. In certain cases, the eyes may also be affected.
