The Universitat de València has taken a firm step towards a more sustainable future with the official presentation of the 2025-2028 Sustainability Director Plan, which happened on Thursday, 19 June at the Vives Space.
The session began with an institutional intervention by the Principal, M.ª Vicenta Mestre, followed by the detailed presentation of the Plan by the hands of the Vice-Principal for Sustainability, Cooperation and Healthy Life, Pilar Serra. On her exhibition, Serra highlighted that this strategic document has been conceived as a dynamic tool to direct the efforts of the university community towards a development model that is more just and respectful with the environment.
The Plan, as it was made clear, not only considers measures to reduce the ecological impact of the university campuses, but also seeks to generate a positive and transformative impact in society through training, sensitivity and collective action. It is structured by areas and groups of interests, including indicators to measure the efficiency of the actions linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The session ended with a panel discussion gathering multiple expert voices such as Edurne Caballero (CERAI), Jaime Fons (REDS-SDSN España), Andreu Escrivà (Clima y Energía) and Maria Sarabria (CRUE-Sostenibilidad). All of them agreed on highlighting the value of an institutional commitment such as the one taken by the UV to contribute to the ecological transition from the academic world.
The Plan is presented as a living document, open to future contributions and ready to be adapted to the changing challenges of the global context. On top of meeting the values of article 4 of the UV Statutes, which highlight the defence of the environment, the document is linked with other strategic issues such as governance, inclusion, economic sustainability and knowledge transfer.
With this initiative, the Universitat de València positions itself strongly at the vanguard of university politics in sustainability, showing that academic leadership is also measured by its positive impact in the world surrounding it.
