Gut colonization during the first years of life represents a critical window for immune system development and long-term health. Among the microorganisms that dominate this stage, bifidobacteria play a key role due to their ability to metabolize specific dietary components, successfully colonize the gut, and establish important interactions with the host.
In this seminar, Dr. Esteban Torres will present recent advances in understanding how bifidobacteria metabolize dietary carbohydrates, the factors that determine their ecological success in the gut, and the molecular mechanisms involved in intestinal colonization and immune modulation. She will also discuss how this knowledge can be translated into nutritional strategies aimed at promoting health during the earliest stages of life.
