RULES FOR THE XXX «ESTUDI GENERAL» EUROPEAN AWARD FOR THE POPULARISATION OF SCIENCE 2024
The University of Valencia and the Alzira City Council, in collaboration with Edicions Bromera, announce the XXX «Estudi General» European Award for the Popularisation of Science with the aim of stimulating the production and dissemination of works that, using accessible language, make scientific and technological advances, as well as interesting aspects of the various fields of knowledge, available to the general public and pre-university students in particular.
1. AIM AND PARTICIPANTS
1.1 The award is open to essays written in Catalan, Spanish, English or French, with a length between 250,000 and 300,000 characters (including spaces), aimed at popularising scientific and technological knowledge. Additional materials to the text must be original, free of rights or contain the corresponding reproduction license.
1.2 Individuals who have received this award in previous editions are excluded from this call for entries.
1.3 The following texts are also excluded from this call for entries:
• Bachelor’s degree final projects
• Master’s degree final projects
• Doctoral theses
• Scientific articles
2. SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS
2.1 Works should preferably be submitted through the online office of the University of Valencia (http://webges.uv.es/uvEntreuWeb)*. Alternatively, they can be submitted in paper form to the University of Valencia Registry Office (Av. Blasco Ibáñez 13, 46010 Valencia), addressed to the Science Culture and Innovation Unit. In the latter case, an electronic copy must be enclosed. The cover page must include «Opta al Premi Europeu de Divulgació Científica “Estudi General” 2024», as well as the title, the author’s name, postal address, telephone number and e-mail address. Works may be submitted under a pseudonym, in which case the real name must be provided separately in a sealed envelope. Submissions may also be made to any official registry office as provided for in Article 16.4 of Law 39/2015, of 1 October, on the Legal Regime of Public Administrations and Common Administrative Procedure.
2.2 The works submitted must be original and unpublished. They will be assessed anonymously by the jury, so they must not contain any reference to their authorship, neither in the text nor in the images.
3. DEADLINES
3.1 The deadline for submitting works is 15 September 2024.
3.2 Following the deadline, the titles of the works submitted will be published on the official noticeboard of the University of Valencia (https://tauler.uv.es/) and on the Science Culture and Innovation Unit website (www.uv.es/cdciencia). Within 10 days after their publication, a complaint can be filed through the online office of the University of Valencia (http://webges.uv.es/uvEntreuWeb). Following this period, and upon settlement of any claims, a definitive list will be released.
3.3 Non-awarded works that have been submitted in printed format may be collected from 13 December 2024 at the Science Culture and Innovation Unit of the University of Valencia (carrer del Serpis, 29, Edifici Beatriu Civera, 46022 Valencia).
4. MONETARY AWARD
4.1 The amount of the prize for the «Estudi General» Award is set at €12,000.00. The prize entails, without any additional compensation, the publication of the winning work in a print run of at least 2,000 copies sold in Catalan and, where appropriate, 2,000 copies sold in Spanish, understood as payment of royalties, and subject to the withholding tax prescribed by law.
4.2 This prize is compatible with any other subsidy, grant, income or award.
4.3 The processing and instruction of this procedure will be carried out by the Science Culture and Innovation Unit of the University of Valencia.
4.4 The amount of the prize will be allocated from Chapter IV of the budget of the University of Valencia, under line item 6750800000 of the Science Culture and Innovation Unit.
5. JURY AND ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
5.1 The jury is formed by Rosa M. Donat Beneito, vice-rector for Innovation and Transfer, who will preside; Carolina Moreno, director of the «Sense Fronteres» collection; Francesc Lloret, winner of the 29th edition of this award; Mònica Bolufer, researcher at the Department of Modern and Contemporary History at the University of Valencia; and Juli Peretó, researcher at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Valencia.
5.2 If any member of the jury finds reason for abstention, they must decline to be part of the jury, without prejudice to the liabilities for failing to do so.
5.3 To ensure an objective assessment of the works, the jury will consider the following weighting criteria:
• Scientific interest and coherence: up to 3 points
• Creativity and originality: up to 3 points
• Clarity and structure: up to 3 points
• Correct use of grammar and spelling: up to 1 point
5.4 The prize will be awarded on a competitive basis. The jury will conduct subsequent voting rounds until a particular work obtains a majority of votes and is declared the winner. However, the prize may not be awarded if the jury considers that none of the works submitted meets the minimum quality standards to be published. In no case will the amount of the prize be split among multiple winners. The winner will be announced on the official noticeboard of the University of Valencia.
6. AWARD CEREMONY
The prize will be awarded on the same day as the rest of the Premis Ciutat d’Alzira, that is, on 8 November 2024, during a literary awards dinner in which the winner will receive the cash prize and a trophy symbolising the Premis Literaris Ciutat d’Alzira.
7. PUBLICATION
Edicions Bromera and the University of Valencia Publishing Service will co-publish the Catalan version of the award-winning work in the «Sense Fronteres» collection. Additionally, these publishers will have exclusive rights, for a maximum of one month, to publish any non-winning work on the recommendation of the jury. The University of Valencia Publishing Service will have exclusive rights to publish them in other languages and will promote their translations.
8. RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS
8.1 The submission of applications implies full acceptance of these rules and of the rights and obligations arising from them. All matters not covered in these rules will be settled by the jury at its own discretion.
8.2 The winner undertakes to be part of the jury in the next edition of the awards, as an obligation derived from winning and entitled to remuneration.
9. RESOLUTION
9.1 The resolution of the award will be issued by the rector of the University of Valencia within a maximum of 6 months from the publication of the call.
9.2 An administrative appeal may be lodged against the resolution of the award (which exhausts the administrative channels) before the same body that issued the resolution within one month from the day after its notification or publication. Alternatively, an appeal may be lodged before the contentious administrative courts of the autonomous government of Valencia within two months from the day after publication of the resolution.
9.3 The granting of these awards must be in accordance with the provisions of these rules and, additionally, with Law 1/2015, of 6 February, of the Valencian Government, on Public Treasury, the Public Sector and Subsidies, and with Law 39/2015, of 1 October, on the Legal Regime of Public Administrations and Common Administrative Procedure.
10. PROCESSING OF PERSONAL DATA

10.2 Purpose and legal basis of data processing. In compliance with Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and the free dissemination of such data, the personal data provided in this call will be incorporated into the relevant information systems of the University of Valencia, with the purpose of managing and processing applications in accordance with the provisions of Law 38/2003, of 17 November, on Subsidies.
10.3 Origin of the data. The University of Valencia will only process the data provided by applicants.
10.4 Recipients of the personal data. Within the framework of the relationship established as a result of your application to participate in the award, we inform you that only the data that are strictly necessary will be transferred in the following cases and for the following purposes:
• To banks for the payment of the amount of the prize.
• For the publication of the award resolution on the official noticeboard of the University of Valencia. Additionally, for informative purposes, the resolution may be announced on web pages hosted under the official domain of the University of Valencia.
• For the publication of the beneficiary, amount and object of the award in the transparency portal of the University of Valencia (www.uv.es/transparencia), in compliance with the provisions of Article 8.1 a) of Law 19/2013, of 9 December, on Transparency, Access to Public Information and Good Governance, and Article 9.1 e) of Law 2/2015, of 2 April, on Transparency, Good Governance and Citizen Participation of the Valencian Community.
• To the Spanish subsidies database, in compliance with the provisions of Article 20 of Law 38/2003, of 17 November, on Subsidies.
10.5 Data storage period. Data will be stored and deleted according to the following criteria:
• In the case of non-awarded participants, data will be kept during the periods stipulated in administrative legislation to guarantee the rights of participants.
• In the case of the winner, data will be kept for the entire period linked to the management of the prize and for the purposes of accreditation and certification of the awarding of the prize.
10.6 Rights. Data subjects have the right to request from the data controller access to and rectification or erasure of their personal data or restriction of processing, or to object to processing, as well as the right to data portability. Data subjects may exercise their rights by sending an e-mail to lopd@uv.es from an official UV e-mail address, or by sending a written request accompanied by a copy of an identity document and, where appropriate, by supporting documentation, to the academic delegate for data protection at the University of Valencia.
10.7 Right to file a complaint with a supervisory authority. The University of Valencia, its foundations and associated entities are adapted to the LOPD and the RGPD. The address lopd@uv.es can be used for information, suggestions, requests to exercise rights and friendly resolution of disputes regarding the protection of personal data, without prejudice to the right to file a complaint with the competent control authority.
