The University of Valencia organises the I Edition of the Agrotec-Alumni HACKATHON Awards for the best innovative solutions to solve problems associated with agri-food in the twenty-first century. There are four sessions, in the Eduard Boscà Science Library on the Burjassot Campus and the winning idea will receive a prize of € 1000. In addition, 4 second prizes of € 250 will be awarded to the finalists. Mavi Mestre, rector of the academic institution, has opened the sessions at 4.30 pm today.

A hackathon (originally a type of meeting of programmers, developers and hackers) is a meeting that takes place to join forces in a short period of time, working and developing new concepts, ideas and solutions on a specific issue or problem. This hackathon wants to respond to the demands of innovation, in a highly competitive environment such as agri-food, encourage student participation and update their scientific-technological capabilities by learning innovative methodological criteria.

The events will consist of the pre-hackathon (Wednesday), the hackathon (November 5 and 6) and the feedback / post-hackathon (November 9). In the activity, in teams, 50 students from the University of Valencia of 2nd, 3rd or 4th year in any degree, master and doctorate will participate.

In addition, each undergraduate student will receive a certificate of recognition of 1.5 free-choice credits for participating in the activity. The best ideas, in addition to being awarded, will be shared with research groups related to the proposals, so as to promote the transfer of ideas and knowledge.

This activity is the result of an agreement between the University of Valencia and the Ministry of Innovation, Universities, Science and Digital Society to promote the culture of innovation in the agri-food sector, for which the Valencian Government contributes 35,000 euros to the Agro-Tec Alumni program. With these funds, a platform, the hackathon and a conference between the students and the research staff are developed.
