The Institute of Corpuscular Physics (IFIC), a joint centre of the University of Valencia and the CSIC, has organised with the CEFIRE CTEM a training course aimed at secondary school teachers in which some concepts of twentieth century physics included in the resume.
The course speakers will be IFIC researchers who are experts in each of the topics to be discussed. There will also be a final, more practical session, dedicated to explaining experiments related to particle physics that can be carried out in classrooms, as a demonstration for students.
This course aims to introduce secondary school teachers to some basic concepts related to particle physics, nuclear physics and cosmology. Some aspects of the theory of relativity, quantum theory, the Standard Model and Einstein’s gravity will be reviewed, highlighting some of their applications, such as medical diagnosis using nuclear techniques. A session focused on the teaching of these contents will also be included, and various demonstrations and simple experiments related to these topics that can be carried out in the classrooms will be presented. Some of the speakers will be expert scientists in specific areas, which will also make it possible to explain the direction in which research is currently directed.
The course will begin on January 15 and will consist of a weekly session on Monday afternoons, until March 11, plus a special session in which the IFIC facilities will be visited and participants will be able to see some of the institute’s laboratories.
Each session will last 2 hours, from 5 to 7 p.m., with an initial lecture of approximately one hour and then a round of questions. This year the sessions will again be in person and will take place at the Faculty of Physics.
