Today, Friday 27 September, Valencia hosted the European Researchers’ Night, a Europe-wide event for science popularisation co-organised in the city by the University of Valencia (UV) and several other science and dissemination institutions. Activities have been taking place since 10 a.m. at section XI of the Turia River (opposite the Palau de la Música), with 22 workshops, games and activities that continued this afternoon from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
“The University of Valencia, as a leading international research and education centre, takes science out of the laboratories with this event, demonstrating that improving society largely depends on scientific knowledge”, highlighted Rosa Donat, vice-rector for Innovation and Transfer at the UV, during her participation in the event. She also remarked that, “with dissemination activities like this, the academic institution aims to promote scientific vocations among young people, especially women, and to increase society’s interest in scientific knowledge”.
Today's event, organised by the University of Valencia, is also supported by the Foundation for the Promotion of Health Research of the Valencian Community (Fisabio), the INCLIVA Health Research Institute (both entities dependent on the Valencian Department of Health), the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) and the Valencian branch of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
The five workshops proposed by the UV include “Archaeoscience”, “Make Your Own Slime”, “The Rainbow of Red Cabbage”, “Virus Hunters” and “Chocolate”, led by researchers from the Department of Prehistory, Archaeology and Ancient History, the Institute of Molecular Science and the Institute of Integrative Systems Biology (I2SysBio).
The event was free to attend and featured around twenty workshops, games and activities in which participants of all ages could were able to have fun uncovering the mysteries of science. The event was split into two sessions: one in the morning from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and one in the afternoon from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The European Researchers’ Night is part of the SCIENCE GTS project, an event associated with the European Union's MSCA and Citizens initiative, funded through the Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions. Call Identifier: HORIZON-MSCA-2023-CITIZENS-01.
Activities at the Burjassot Campus of the UV
After the activities at the Turia River, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., scientists from the University of Valencia organised several activities at the Burjassot Campus. These included a snack dinner (the campus kiosk was open), a visit to the UV Museum of Natural History, a treasure hunt with ultraviolet light torches, planet observation from the Astronomical Observatory and light traps to attract insects, among others.
