Conversation with Pascuala Garcia Martinez, full professor at the Faculty of Physics, and Sandra Obiol i Francés, associate professor of Sociology.
In honour of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we will talk about the impostor that activates within us and how a perverse mechanism comes into play, making us feel more like an impostor the more successful we become, next 12 February in the Education Library. We reflect on the gender component and how it reflects a dynamic of structural inequality by sex that is given by a masculine and androcentric perspective.
The event will begin with a welcome coffee at 11:00, followed by a conversation at 11:30 with Pascuala Garcia Martinez, full professor at the Faculty of Physics, and Sandra Obiol y Francés, associate professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences. Moderated by: Remei Castellón Belda, journalist
In the conversation, we will address some key elements that play a major role such as the perfectionist style of setting unattainable goals that generate constant feelings of never reaching them. But also the “superwoman” and how we struggle to ask for help and support, or the need to keep on studying more and more because we never feel the confidence of being expert enough... We aim to avoid pathologisation and come to understanding that these are not individual experiences, but that patriarchal society is at the root of this dynamic.
We will also focus on the so-called "mansplaining" that we suffer at the hands of colleagues, teachers or professionals and which consists of the condescending and paternalistic way in which men explain something to women, often even when the woman is much more expert.
Date 12 february 2024 at 11:00 to 13:00. Every day.
