Abstract:

Since the 1850s, a series of sanitary initiatives began to be deployed in the city of Santiago with the purpose of dealing with the different faces of urban unhealthiness. To comply with this, it was necessary to inspect and monitor the city in a context in which there was neither the infrastructure nor the trained personnel for health work. Thus was born the figure of urban inspectors, diverse and complex subjects that allow us to delve into the sensory mechanisms that made possible in the first instance a centralized scientific supervision of unhealthiness. From various sources, some of their figures, roles, trajectories and experiences in the urban fabric of the capital are reconstructed and the epistemic tensions that arose in the contours of perceptions that may or may not constitute sufficient evidence in different institutional and regulatory contexts are analyzed.

Biography:

Bachelor's and Master's degree in History from Andrés Bello University and PhD candidate in Applied Humanities from Andrés Bello University, Chile. Lines of research in History of Science and Medicine, Historical Epistemology, Sensory History and Digital Humanities.
