Already during his lifetime, the Genevan critic and essayist Jean Starobinski (1920-2019) was celebrated as “the last of the humanists.” Famous above all for his writings on the Enlightenment and his groundbreaking readings of such authors as Montaigne, Rousseau, Diderot, Baudelaire and Stendhal, he has also left an abundant corpus of essays on the history of medicine and the body. Specialists knew some of it, particularly his 1960 medical thesis on the history of the treatment of melancholy; it has attained a larger audience since the publication of the compilation L’Encre de la mélancolie. The López Piñero Institute for Science Studies celebrates Jean Starobinski’s centennial by bringing together two outstanding scholars to situate his œuvre in the history of the sciences of mind and the body:
