The event includes a talk entitled «Ferits per la ciència: Contes de científics»
The Lopez Piñero Institute for the History of Science and Medicine (joint centre of the CSIC and the University of Valencia), with headquarters in the Palau de Cerveró, hosts the launching of the last monograph of Mètode journal, Científics lletraferits, which will take place on Thursday 12 June, at 19:00, in the conference room of the mentioned Institute. The event, entitled Ferits per la ciència: Contes de científics (Damaged by Science: Scientists stories), will have the participation of the physician and researcher Salvador Macip, co-editor of the monograph together with Jordi de Manuel. Martí Domínguez, director of Mètode, will also participate and offer a reflection on the relationship between the scientific and humanistic culture. During the event, copies of the book will be handed out among the attendees.
Científics lletraferits brings together twenty stories written by outstanding authors of Catalan literature with scientific or technological training. The book has had two important editors: Jordi de Manuel and Salvador Macip. Jordi de Manuel is a biologist, professor and writer and has published a dozen novels which combine, mainly, black novel and science fiction. Salvador Macip is a doctor, researcher and writer. He has published five novels and two children tales, in addition to three scientific dissemination books.
The stories, each one with its own personality, go into universes full of mathematical wits, references to biology, chemistry or to the same logic of scientific research. As stated in the prologue by the editors, «this is a book that proves the artificial limits we create between Science and Humanities can be removed successfully».
The editors have also highlighted the effort and enthusiasm, as well as the teamwork, of the fourteen authors and six women authors who have participated in the monograph. The stories that form Científics lletraferits have been written by Marià Alemany, Sílvia Aymerich, Miquel Barceló, Daniel Closa, Anna Crusafont, Carles M. Cuadras, Martí Domínguez, Xavier Duran, Rosa Fabregat, Jordi Font-Agustí, Teresa Franquesa, Isidre Grau, Amàlia Lafuente, Salvador Macip, Jordi de Manuel, Joan Marcé, Miquel de Palol, Pere Puigdomènech, Carme Torras and Carles Zafon. The stories, although they are independent, have Science and Technology as protagonists. The twenty stories are grouped into seven thematic sections: «History, arts and chance»; «Life and Death»; «Science and crimes»; «Interfaces and games»; «Make Science»; «Natural and human landscapes»; and «Other worlds».
The book has the collaboration of the artist Jaume Plensa, who has given several works to illustrate the set of narratives. Plensa, with an international recognised standing career, has been recently awarded with the Velázquez Prize for Plastic Arts by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.
The monograph Científics lletraferits has been supported by the Chair for Scientific Dissemination and the Language Policy Service of the University of Valencia.
