BreastSCan will enable breast cancer detection faster, more accurate, and more personalized

The “Pan-European Breast Image Platform for Advanced AI-based Breast Cancer Screening” (BreastSCan) project will enable the development and testing of advanced AI tools to make breast cancer detection faster, more accurate, and more personalized, ultimately improving patient outcomes across Europe. The initiative is creating one of Europe's largest and most diverse breast cancer imaging datasets, with over one million images from nine countries.

This massive resource, which includes mammograms, ultrasound, and MRI scans, directly contributes to the European Cancer Imaging Initiative by making the data available through Cancer Image Europe. The project brings together 20 leading partners from across European Union to build the future of cancer screening.

The gathered data will be integrated into the Cancer Image Europe platform for use by researchers and innovators, strengthening Europe's competitiveness in AI-driven cancer research. BreastSCan is focused on establishing common guidelines for data quality, building a secure technical infrastructure, and training healthcare professionals to use AI tools effectively. Its long-term goal is to enable earlier cancer detection, leading to better treatment outcomes and higher survival rates for patients throughout Europe.

The University of Valencia is responsible for the ethical and legal management of the project, under the direction of Dr. Ricard Martínez, to ensure that patient data is handled in accordance with the highest standards of privacy and security.

The project started on September 1st 2025 and will finish on August 31st 2029. The total grant amount is 4.572.072,55 euros, which 3.657.658,05 corresponds to EU funding through the EU4Health Programme 2021–2027.

Austria, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Croatia, Sweden, Malta, Greece, Hungary are the countries the 20 partners are from, led by the European Institute for Biomedical Imaging Research (EIBIR). The project is under the grant agreement number 101219312.
