Comprehensive palliative care and humanisation of care

The end-of-life care line began with the participation of Enric Benito and Pilar Barreto in agreements between the UV and the SECPAL (Spanish Society of Palliative Care) to jointly design a measure of spirituality in patients that was clinically, psychometrically and culturally relevant to measure the resources to deal with symptomatology beyond the physical at the end of life. After a decade of productive collaboration, research in this field (EPIONE study) progressed towards intervention (KIBO protocol). On the other hand, always with the emphasis on methodology, the proposal and validation of new measurement tools, research was extended to other relevant topics such as dignity or demoralisation syndrome in patients.

The efficiency of interventions on quality of life is designed and studied in patients and their environment as well as in professionals. In the case of professionals, research is carried out not only in the health field, whether in palliative care, intensive care or home care, but also in general in professional activities with high emotional demand, such as care for people with functional diversity, children with developmental disorders or police. There are several interventions based on Positive Psychology that show effectiveness in reducing stress in professionals with high emotional demand.

From ARMAQoL, with an emphasis on methodology and in collaboration with clinical experts from the UV, we investigate the use of different mechanisms and formats of these interventions, making them more appealing, and trying to reduce dropout rates. In professionals, the multicentre YASO study, in collaboration with the UIB (Noemí Sansó, member of the team) was our first incursion into the inner curriculum of palliative care professionals. Nowadays, this research, with a strong theoretical basis, has been consolidated as a diagnostic approach in health systems in numerous countries, in different languages.

Currently, in this line, we are developing the project ‘Longitudinal study of compassion’ and other determinants of professional quality of life: A research on palliative care professionals at national level (CompPal), financed by the State Research Agency - 2018 Calls, R&D&I Projects Research Challenges.

Contrastive and cross-cultural linguistics. Corpus linguistics

It is based on the cultural and linguistic contrast, using corpus linguistics as a basis, between several modern majority languages such as Peninsular Spanish and English. The aim is to clarify concepts and look for practical applications both at a particular level between specific communicative communities and at a global level within the educational setting, as well as in social and professional communication, such as business communication. The tools of corpus linguistics, from a cross-cultural perspective, prove to be essential both for the collection of real data and compilation of corpora and for their analysis and application of results. In this team, the study of current social and professional communication is approached in symbiosis with the digital world, not only as a mediator, but also as a target for new generation applications.

Contrastive linguistics and languages for professional and academic purposes

The group also studies contrastive linguistics and its application to translation at a lexical-semantic and pragmatic-discursive level between majority languages, e.g. Peninsular Spanish and English, in specialised fields such as health sciencies as well as in other academic and professional contexts.

Design of materials for drug and cosmetic transport

The excipients used to transport active substances (both in therapeutics and cosmetics) are not inert. They can promote or delay absorption and as such, they shape the bioavailability in speed and magnitude of the molecules of interest. It is very important to validate this role in order to optimise the form of administration. Two objectives delimit the line: on the one hand, to describe the effect of the most commonly used vehicles and, on the other hand, to prepare nuts that improve the capacity to increase or decrease absorption depending on the systemic or topical target, respectively. The research group collaborates with other institutions (University of Saarland-Germany and University of Rio Grande do Sul-Brazil, mainly) in the preparation and characterisation of the vehicles. It is responsible for the release studies and the mathematical modelling of the kinetics, which allows the optimisation of the material. He also carries out stability studies.

Drug absorption through intestinal mucosa, lung epithelium, ophthalmic route and skin. Modulation through excipients. Biopharmaceutical evaluation

Understanding the absorption process is an indisputable way to effectively modulate the bioavailability of drugs and to achieve optimisation of the dosage form. The line comprises in vitro and in vivo studies of absorption of different substances, in free solution and in the presence of additives. The process is characterised kinetically to infer the mechanisms underlying the absorption of pharmacologically active molecules and to describe, at a later stage, the effect produced by the excipients of the dosage forms. The conclusions are tested by bioavailability studies. The ultimate aim is to describe strategies for vectoring the drug to the target tissue, in adequate quantity and speed for optimal effect, while reducing distribution to the rest of the body, leading to reduced side effects and improved safety.

Envejecimiento y calidad de vida

Biopsychosocial variables aimed at improving the quality of life in the life cycle. José Manuel Tomás' career in the field of his research line is well known. He has co-directed with Amparo Oliver competitive longitudinal projects in the field under the MICIN/AEI/FEDER Challenges call for proposals. Currently in 2021-2022, together with Laura Badenes, he is the Director of the Official Master's Degree in Social and Health Care in Dependency at the Universitat de València. The scientific and technical objectives focus on identifying the variables that most influence the quality of life of the elderly, how they relate to each other and how we can work on them according to theoretical reference models from different cultures. We research both in the field of so-called successful elderly (such as active and healthy people who attend educational programmes for older adults), as well as older people living in community or those who are institutionalised. The research with national and international impact of the team members in this line is reflected in impact journals and includes research collaborations in the field with researchers from our own university, or collaborations with universities such as UNCC Charlotte in the USA, Universidad Privada del Norte in Lima-Peru or the Universidad de Costa Rica.

Its aim is to systematically and objectively accumulate the evidence obtained in empirical studies on a given problem. Therefore, systematic reviews are secondary studies that synthesise the available scientific information through rigorous and explicit methods, which saves time for health and social care professionals and provides them with an overview of what the scientific evidence suggests about studies in promotion of the life quality.

Territorial diagnoses: inclusion and social cohesion plans, equality plans, work-family life conciliation plans

Municipal public policies require a territorial analysis to be able to implement plans, programmes and projects adapted to the emerging priority needs for citizens. The participatory action research methodology has been identified as strategic to provide a solution to this type of policy and relevant results have been produced in this regard.

The narrative perspective in community-based development

The constructivist paradigm is gaining ground among qualitative researchers and new methodologies such as the narrative are opening up for research in local communities. Especially on problems that are not usually visible and that, through the recognition of the strategy of the citizens’ involvement in the solution of them, it is possible to plan processes of social change that recognize the need to generate public policies of community development.

Three-dimensional cephalometric analysis for the diagnosis and study of the orthodontic population

The introduction of diagnostic tools such as CBCT and its clinical application to 3D craniofacial imaging is one of the most interesting subjects in dentistry. One of the questions that arise in orthodontic diagnosis is the possibility of being guided by 3D cephalometry.

Tooth whitening

Diagnosis and treatment of dental colour pathology. Colorimetry. In vivo and in vitro studies on bleaching agents and procedures.

Traffic and Road Safety

The topics of research and development are very broad and include epidemiological studies, accident research, causes of accidents, risk factors, risk groups, vulnerable users, driver behaviour, basic psychological processes, attitudes, motivations and values underlying behaviour, the special case of offenders and repeat offenders, as well as autonomous driving.

In addition to the human factor, the subject of study includes the roads (with special attention to black spots and accident hotspots, as well as signage, which is particularly variable), vehicles, and the condition of all of them.

Transport and Sustainable Mobility

The research and development topics are very broad and include studies of the travel habits or needs of users of a given territory or means of transport, user satisfaction, public transport, the impact of changes in supply, soft modes, freight, logistics, last mile, fares, accessibility, inclusiveness, gender, environment, electric mobility, etc.

Likewise, and even more so in the case of Road Safety, Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) are the object of study and development, as well as other means of land transport, such as rail, tram and metro, as well as maritime and air transport.
