Abstract:
The World economy has always relied on the ability of transporting goods. With the introduction of containerized shipping, global supply chains have flourished and are now demanding more cost efficient and reliable transport . Liner shippers have responded by increasing the capacity of their fleet, deploying vessels of over 18.000 Twenty Equivalent Units (TEUs). This move has, however, complicated the work of stowage planners, whose job is to arrange the cargo on the vessel, efficiently and with the least cost. This talk will introduce the stowage planning problem as it is seen from an industrial perspective. The talk will be a journey from the early OR models to nowadays state-of-the art decompositions where current planning trends and future challenges will be presented.
