For several years, ADHEME has conducted a series of studies on didactic, historical and epistemological analyses of school mathematics, including arithmetic, algebra, problem-solving and modelling. The aim of this research was to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics in school systems, not only by understanding the phenomena occurring in them, but also by providing information on the processes of teaching and learning mathematics, as well as teaching models for teachers and curriculum designers. Some of the initial studies were conducted under an agreement between the Universitat de València and the Centre for Research and Advanced Studies (Mexico), which was signed in 1988 and renewed in 2004.
ADHEME is currently renewing its membership and revising its objectives. Its most recent studies focus on two general topics: the study of the cognitive and affective processes during the resolution and posing of mathematical problems (particularly in real-world contexts), and the historical analysis of mathematical ideas, from the point of view of research in the didactics of mathematics.
The Research Group members are collaborating with researchers from other national and international universities.
