Receiving an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis in the family often marks the beginning of an initial period of uncertainty, questions, and a constant search for answers. With the aim of supporting families during these early stages and providing practical tools for everyday life, members of the INVTEA research group will teach the course “My grandchild has autism: an introductory course on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) for relatives who have recently received the diagnosis”, offered within the Nau Gran en Obert course program at the Universitat de València.
The course is specifically designed for grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other close relatives of children who have recently received a diagnosis.
Throughout the sessions, key everyday topics will be addressed, including:
- Introduction to the autism spectrum: characteristics, prevalence, and professionals who can help.
- Common myths surrounding autism.
- ASD at school: educational placement options and family-school coordination.
- Diverse forms of communication across the autism spectrum: pictograms, images, communication boards, and books…
- Processing of smells, tastes, and textures: how ASD affects eating and diet.
- Key considerations in informal social settings: parks, restaurants, supermarkets, family gatherings…
- ASD in adulthood.
- Support networks.

- Format: In-person (10 class hours / 1 Nau Gran credit).
- Dates: January 11–15.
