The Research Group GIUV2013-144 HYBRIDA (Cultural Hybridisations and Migrant Identities), in collaboration with the Association internationale des études québécoises (AIÉQ), is resuming the Quebec writing series after a two-year hiatus caused by the pandemic. The first meeting will feature writer Lori Saint-Martin. This activity is part of the Authors in the Classroom initiative, which is sponsored by the Office of the Vice-Dean of Culture, Equality, Inclusive Policies and Sustainability (CIPIS) and supported by the Department of French and Italian and the Institut Français.
In this meeting with students, which is open to the entire university community, Lori Saint-Martin will discuss her writing process and her triple role as writer, translator (widely awarded and recognised) and university professor with extensive research in feminist studies. The author attaches particular importance to the use of autofiction and the portrayal of intimate and daily life as sources of inspiration. These themes are often centred around childhood and adolescence.
Her latest “autobiographical” story, which is difficult to classify, entitled Pour qui je me prends (“For Whom I Take Myself”), was published in 2020 and received positive reviews from critics. The story explores the path search for identity that leads her to go beyond the borders and limitations imposed by social and personal limitations through the choice of French as a language of expression and affection. The discussion will feature readings from her short stories, collected in anthologies such as Mon père, la nuit (“My Father, at Night”) and Mathématiques intimes (“Intimate Mathematics”).
