In September 2022 officially begins the project OpenWebSearch.eu: OpenWebSearch.EU is the first project financed by the EU to start the website searching of tomorrow.

The project has its origin in the concern for the imbalance of the search engines market. Despite being the backbone of our digital economy, search on the internet is dominated and limited to a few guardians such as Google, Microsoft, Baidu or Yandex. This way, information as a public good, of free access, impartial and transparent, is no longer under public control. This unbalance puts to risk democracy and limits the innovative potential of the research area and the European economy.

From the beginning of the project in 2022, the researchers have been developing the nucleus of an Open Web Index (OWI) as base for a new search on the Internet in Europe. Furthermore, the project establishes the bases of an European Infrastructure of Search and Open Web Analysis (OWSAI), open and extensible, based on the values, principles, legislation and rules of Europe.
