In 1884, after arduous negotiations, the Spanish government acquired the Library of the Osuna House. The collection, established over generations and comprised by more than 35000 volumes, including printouts and manuscripts, entailed one of the most important bibliographic heritages of the country.
This exhibition shows the journey from that collection to the arrival to the Historic Library of the Universitat de València, appreciating both the value of the preserved works, and the efforts the institution’s staff has been making to discover and classify these copies for years. Dukes, duchesses, librarians, bookbinders, and the volumes themselves will guide the visitors through a journey in two levels: that of the main characters who built and preserved a public reference library between the 18th and 19th centuries, and that of the books that, as objects, currently constitute a historical, cultural, and heritage testimony of the House of Osuna.
