Lost documents exhibition– Tchernobyl kids in Cuba
Lost documents – Tchernobyl kids in Cuba
Face-to-face

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the severe nuclear accident of Tchernobyl, the exhibition takes us into the health programme that Cuba developed during 21 years straight.

At the early hours of 26 April 1986, the fourth reactor of the nuclear power station Vladimir ílitx Lenin exploded and caused what is considered the biggest nuclear accident in history. The radioactive cloud reached across half of Europe, in an area of 2.600 square kilometres. Almost a hundred villages disappeared and the population had to be evacuated. It led to thousands of cancer patients and skin diseases that remain until today, exposing almost 8.4 million people in the radication.

When in 2011 the Peruvian writer and visual creator Sonia Cunliffe visited the spa of Tarará, at the East of La Habana, children who were swimming at the beach caught her attention. Afterwards, the meeting with the journalist Maribel Acosta in 2015 encouraged the beginning of a collective research work where they contacted with doctors, patients, translators, research centres, and hospitals, and they visited the archives of the Granma and Juventud Rebelde journals… until reconstructing a part of history barely known that started on 29 March 1990, when the first flight proceeding from the old USSR arrived to Cuba with the first 26.000 children who were from Russia, Belorussia, Ukraine and Moldavia. They received for 21 years, from 1990 to 2011, free medical assistance in Cuba, to treat different diseases that, years later, began to appear as a consequence of radioactivity.
