4th International Conference on the History of Non-Literary Translation. Translation and teaching in Spain (19th century)

  • November 19th, 2018

The scientific and technical translation from French into Spanish in Spain during the 19th century is an activity with a social nature (and not only textual), meaning that it has repercussions for society as a whole. The different kinds of knowledge (technical, scientific, historical, philosophical, etc.) are offered in this country because they are deemed necessary for its development. They allow (or, at least, favour) the modernisation in scientific, industrial, agricultural and institutional activities, among others.

The education field in Spain, which also has a social nature, clearly reveals the translation demand in this area. Many translated didactic texts come from France, a country that has been subject to prominent changes since the beginning of the century, both in the organisation and the contents of teaching.
