Sergio Belles Monserrat holds a degree in Geography and the Environment from the University of Valencia. He has completed specialized postgraduate studies in mountain area management (university master's degree from the University of Lleida) and environmental problem analysis (postgraduate degree from the University of Barcelona).

He holds a PhD from the University of Valencia. His research focuses on the study of socioeconomic dynamics and demographic flows between rural and urban spaces.

He is currently an Assistant Professor (Professor Ajudant Doctor) in the Department of Geography at the University of Valencia. He is also a member of the UDERVAL Research Group (GIUV2015-214), led by Dr. Javier Esparcia and attached to the Interuniversity Institute for Local Development (IIDL).

During his predoctoral stage, he received funding from two different competitive calls: one contract to finance his four years of doctoral studies (ACIF 2021), and another for a research stay at LAGAM at the Université Paul Valéry III de Montpellier (CIBEFP/2023).

His current research focuses primarily on the study of demographic decline dynamics and processes affecting rural areas in the Valencian Community and Spain.
