Description

The research group "Applied Ethics and Democracy" has been working together since 1991 in three areas: Foundations of Ethics, Political Philosophy and Applied Ethics. It arose from a core group of professors from the Academic Area of Moral and Political Philosophy, originally Adela Cortina, Jesús Conill, Domingo García-Marzá and Agustín Domingo, and has grown to the present day.

At present, the group is made up of 1 member, who belong to 4 different public universities: the Universitat de Valencia, the Universitat Jaume I de Castellón, the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia and the Universidad de Murcia.

At the institutional level, also the Étnor Foundation ("for the ethics of business and organisations") is one of the entities that supports the research and is interested in the transfer of knowledge and innovation of the group.

Since 2003 the group has been recognised as a "Group of Excellence" by the Conselleria d'Educació i Ciència of the Valencian government. Initially, through the granting of aid to R+D+I Groups, reference Groups03/179. And, currently, through the PROMETEO Programme of Research Groups of Excellence.

The group develops its research activity through joint research projects. So far, it has developed 9 national competitive research projects, 1 European project, and three projects funded by private institutions. With the aim of training new researchers, the core of the group runs a Doctoral Programme on "Ethics and Democracy", which began in 1986 and was recognised as a Doctorate with Mention of Quality and with Mention of Excellence, a recognition which it continues to receive today. Graduates of this doctorate achieve the highest scores in the evaluation of their research activity. It also offers a Master's degree in "Ethics and Democracy", with a research and academic profile, which enables those who enrol in it to train for research tasks in this area. The group disseminates the results of its research in the following ways:

  1. Publications, both books, published by prestigious publishers, and articles, published in quality journals.
  2. Organisation of congresses, some of which are held every two years, and also courses at other universities.

Goals CT
  • Analyse models of philosophical foundations of morality, in order to develop one that allows for the foundation of civic ethics in a pluralist society.
  • Transform the ethics of discourse, created by Apel and Habermas, offering versions that overcome its deficiencies, applying it to different fields.
  • Analyse theories of citizenship in order to offer, from the different proposals, a model that responds to the demands of democratic citizenship.
  • Research into models of democracy in order to design the outlines of a deliberative or participatory democracy and its normative foundations.
  • Analyse the current proposals for a model of global justice, which will allow us to outline a global governance, capable of distributing public goods.
Research lines
  • Ethics, Science and Technology

Science and technology can cause great harm to human beings, society or the environment if they are not developed with ethical reflection. It is important to take responsibility for their consequences, and to develop an ecological ethic for sustainability.

  • Theories of justice and globalisation

Knowledge of the theories of justice defended throughout history allows us to design an idea of universalist justice that is appropriate to our times, to achieve peaceful coexistence between members of different cultures and traditions, and to confront the phenomenon of globalisation.

  • Ethical and civic education

The aim of education is for pupils to learn to know, to live together and to be fair. In a special way, civic-ethical education contributes to educating in values for living together in pluralistic societies.

  • Human development ethics

The ethics of human development understands development as a process that takes into account the unfolding of human capabilities of the entire population, the equitable distribution of socially produced wealth and respect for ecological balance.

  • Critical hermeneutics

Critical hermeneutics offers us a method of applying ethics that combines the deductive and inductive dimensions, the Kantian and Aristotelian traditions. It tries to understand the context of application, but it also has a universalist theory that can serve as a critical parameter.

  • Democratic politics and civil society

For the improvement of today's democracies, it is important to go to the roots and build a radical democracy, taking the best of the participatory, social and liberal democratic traditions and deepening the exercise of deliberation. Civil society can participate from various spheres.

  • Business and economic ethics

The purpose of the economy and of business is to satisfy human needs with quality and justice. Business ethics understands that its responsibilities are not merely economic or legal, but also social and environmental.

  • Ethics and Political philosophy

Ethics tries to clarify what morality is, how it is founded and how ethical principles are applied to everyday life. Political philosophy asks about political obligation, drawing on concepts such as power, authority, legitimacy, consent and mutual recognition.

  • Theories of citizenship and democracy

Designing the features of democratic citizenship is central to ethics and politics. To achieve this, it is useful to analyse theories of citizenship and models of democracy, arising from philosophical traditions, which help us to put experience into concepts and guide everyday moral and political praxis.

  • Neuroethics and Neuropolitics

Neuroscience ethics develops an ethical framework for regulating conduct in neuroscientific research. The neuroscience of ethics refers to the impact of neuroscientific knowledge on our understanding of ethics itself. Neuropolitics analyses the brains of voters.
