This project raises four general objectives, all of them based on 2D materials with layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and metal-organic networks (MOFs) for possible energy and environmental applications.
The first objective is the design and synthesis of LDHs and compounds with LDH and graphene derivatives, for their use as catalysts for energy conversion reactions such as hydrogen (HER) and oxygen (OER) evolution reactions or photo- or electrocatalytic CO2 reduction into other carbon-containing compounds of interest and fuels such as CO, CH4, CH3OH, etc.
The second objective is the synthesis of two-dimensional MOFs with redox-active anilato-type ligands, that can be easily reduced. The electrocatalytic activity of these 2D MOFs will be measured for the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions.
The third objective focuses on spintronics, since it is intended to prepare 2D MOFs with electrical conductivity and magnetic ordering. For this aim, we will use anilato-type bridging ligands since they can be easily reduced and functionalized to modulate their electronic properties. We will use different transition metals to ensure magnetic ordering. Later these 2D MOFs will be delaminated in thin films with the final objective of preparing a spin valve device.
The last objective is the synthesis of 2D and 3D MOFs with anilato-type ligands and transition metals or lanthanoids with magnetic ordering or with single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior. These MOFs will be used in solvent exchange reactions and their ability to absorb different solvents, gases, toxic metal ions and polluting organic molecules will be measured. The ultimate goal is to obtain systems that can remove various pollutants from water. The change in the magnetic properties of these MOFs could make them useful as magnetic chemical sensors. Finally, the luminescent properties of the lanthanoid-containing MOFs will be measured in order to prepare optical sensors based on these MOFs.
