Teaching a discipline such as physiology, where we talk about cells, molecules and processes that relate to each other and affect the overall functioning of the organism, is methodologically very difficult. Mainly because all the elements and phenomena involved are invisible. It is not unreasonable, therefore, to think that a language such as that used in graphic narrative can be a great support for this work.
Using comic pages that represent cellular processes, and encouraging students to construct their own narratives, they exercise their ability to visualise the invisible.
Resources
1. The language of comics, which combines verbal and non-verbal language, is very useful for representing complex and dynamic processes and phenomena.
2. This advantage can be used both for explanations of complex abstract concepts and for challenging students to interpret these concepts using images and cartoons they have created themselves.
3. There are a large number of comic books on the publishing market that tell life experiences related to illness and health, offering a key tool for stimulating empathy and the social component in the training of health science professionals.
4. This project brings together these advantages through the production of videos in which we use visual metaphors from comics to explain physiological processes, as well as the production of commentaries on comics that can provoke reflection and debate.
