Review and implementation of a support program for the prevention and treatment of maternal and child malnutrition

GENERAL OBJECTIVES

  • Reduction in the rate of maternal and child malnutrition in the municipality of Ampefy.
  • Improvement of the health status of the most vulnerable population groups in the municipality of Ampefy.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

  1. Improved knowledge about nutrition and health promotion during the first 1000 days;
  2. Implementation of the support program for the treatment of maternal and child malnutrition offered at the Change Onlus medical surgical center;
  3. Evaluation of the effectiveness of moringa administration for the treatment of malnutrition

ACTIVITIES

  • Organization of events aimed at promoting maternal and child health (open day at the Change Onlus medical surgical center, pre-birth courses, raising awareness among families about correct food combinations);
  • Dissemination of educational material (posters, books, brochures, videos, etc.) for the prevention of maternal and child malnutrition and the promotion of breastfeeding;
  • Development of training activities for local nutritional agents (on prenatal care, breastfeeding, complementary nutrition for children from six months, the correct frequency of consumption and combination of foods to achieve a balanced diet);
  • Design of a nutritional education program based on local food availability and the identification of nutritional deficiencies;
  • Production of an educational card that accompanies the mother and child during the first 1000 days.
  • Evaluation of the clinical and nutritional status of pregnant women, newborns and children during nutritional screening activities through the collection of anthropometric data;
  • Programming of workshops, seminars and refresher courses for local nutritional agents and all health personnel involved in the intervention;
  • Development of a protocol for the identification and monitoring of cases of maternal and child malnutrition.
  • Provision of moringa powder as a dietary supplement to all pregnant mothers who come to the Change Onlus medical surgical center;
  • Taking biological samples to assess hematological parameters.

RESULTS

  • Improved knowledge about nutrition as part of healthy living;
  • Increased use of healthcare during the first 1000 days;
  • Improvement of hygienic and sanitary conditions.
  • Identification of the population groups with the highest prevalence of malnutrition based on anthropometric determinations;
  • Reduction in the rate of maternal and child malnutrition in the municipality of Ampefy;
  • Improved monitoring of malnutrition cases treated at the Change Onlus medical surgical center.
  • Changes in hematological parameters after the introduction of moringa as a dietary supplement during pregnancy and lactation;
  • Increased consumption of moringa in the usual diet.
